Some people don't graduate in four years for several reasons. It can be poverty causing them only to afford so many years, people finding other jobs that don't require employment, or they fail out of college.
Students have access to finical aid but don't cover everything. There is a gap not covered by aid or the family's help if they can afford it. Adddintonly studies have shown that poverty in any stage in education has effects in later stages. Students how grew in poverty tend to behind before they begin school. It is considered very difficult to break the effect of poverty.
Some students can find jobs in college that pay well enough and are secure enough that they no longer need college. Some students that work while in school may find jobs in their fields that don't require a degree, and they have the experience needed to apply. They may make the decision to drop college to pursue this. If they do go back to college, they aren't counted as the percentage that graduated in four years.
Some students don't graduate because of their grades. Around 30% of students fail out of college. The main drop out is centered in community colleges instead of four years, but it happens in four years. The majority of students that fail out are minorities and those on financial aid.
